THE RAVENS OF THE TOWER OF LONDON
THE RAVENS OF THE TOWER OF LONDON
~ Legend says that ~
'If the ravens of the Tower of London fly away or are lost, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.'
It is believed that at least 6 ravens should be present in the Tower of London lest the country and the Monarchy will fall. The names of the current Town ravens are Jubilee, Harris, Gripp, Rocky, Erin, Poppy and Georgie.
LET'S GO BACK IN THE 17th CENTURY!!!
The enduring legend has it that King Charles II (on throne - 1660 to 1685) was told by his royal astronomer, John Flamsteed, that some ravens were interfering with his observations and instruments of his lab in the White Tower. Charles II, who himself disliked ravens, ordered his guards to kill those ravens only to be told that if those ravens leave the tower, the White Tower would fall and a great disaster would befall the kingdom. Sensibly, the king changed his decision and then onwards, at least 6 ravens are always found in the tower.
It is not a piece of cake to prevent the ravens from flying away. To prevent the birds from flying away, one of their wings is clipped. However, it does not harm them at all. It just imbalances their flight to ensure that they do not fly far away.
We don't actually know if its really true or not, but it is a prominent belief. Moreover, there are a lot of theories behind this myth but this one is the most well known.
